When it was getting close to the time for the annual Joey Ramone Birthday Bash concert, I recommended Mindless Self Indulgence to Joey's brother, Mickey Leigh, as a good, exciting band for the bill. He asked if I thought we could get them so I contacted the band's management on Joey's family's behalf to see if MSI might be interested. Some people in the audience at the birthday bash concert, armed with this knowledge, surely would've liked to have kicked me in the balls for instigating this. Not everybody at Irving Plaza on May 19th exactly loved MSI, to put it mildly. I'm guessing most of those people were over 30. An old, burned-out rocker chick backstage cornered me and droned on about how much she HATED them, which is actually to their credit. A lot of other people in the audience were blown away by MSI's short set. The daughter of Mickey's assistant, a nice kid about to graduate high school, told me that she was floored and was clearly awestruck when she told me that she'd never seen a woman rock out the way bassist Lyn-Z just had. At the birthday bash, people seemed to either really like them or fucking detest them. That's what I'd expected. No middle ground. They went on right before The Strokes and, as far as I'm concerned, MSI blew those boring twats off the stage. (Not that that takes a lot, mind you.)
