RAMONES BEAT ON CANCER
THE JOHNNY RAMONE BENEFIT CONCERT
October 8, 2004 at Spirit, NYC
Johnny Ramone, one of the greatest and most influencial rock 'n' roll guitarists of all time, died of prostate cancer on September 15, 2004. The third of the original Ramones to die since 1991, he was the second to succumb to cancer. The "Ramones Beat On Cancer" concert took place on Johnny and CJ Ramone's birthday with profits benefiitting cancer research and the lymphoma foundation.
It's depressing to be getting more obituaries than new albums these days out of our musical heroes who originally instigated punk. The tireless conga line of death will claim all of us eventually but lately it seems to have more and more spots opening up for those makers of music that had most to do with youth, defiance and rebellion. The original architects of punk rock are leaving the building. "Life," Kurt Vonnegut Jr. recently wrote, "is no way to treat an animal, not even a mouse." The Ramones are one of those bands who have made the whole awkward, often painful experience of being alive a lot more fun for many of us and it's noteworthy that, even in death, they manage to benefit those of us who are still here - the sick, the dispossessed, the good, the bad and the ugly.
In the spirit of the Ramones, CJ started his set with "Durango 95." Wish you were there if you weren't.
