Stuff@Night magazine, August 16, 2005 - August 29, 2005
Thanks to the HUNG and HANGED exhibitions, John Nikolai made Boston's Stuff@Night magazine's 7th annual Hot 100, their list of "the hot-hotter-hottest people, places, trends, and more" in "Boston and beyond," edited by Tamara Wieder.
> HOT CURATOR: John Nikolai
His striking black-and-white photographs of great liberal thinkers, punk rock’s
aging royalty, and his own devilish muse have established him as one of the
best shutterbugs in town. But Cambridge’s John Nikolai has lately also
revealed himself as a dynamic curator of other artists’ work. His recent
show " Hanged, " at Inman Square’s Zeitgeist Gallery, had some
amazing pieces by Nikolai’s legendary acquaintances (Jon Langford from
the Mekons, Half Japanese’s Jad and David Fair, Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh).
So does the ongoing "Hung" — at Club Passim through September
24 — which features works by trailblazing transvestite and CBGB denizen
Jayne County, Ramones artistic director Arturo Vega, and Punk-magazine co-founder
John Holmstrom. Even better, they’re all surprisingly inexpensive. Stop
by and see for yourself.
